Corporate Relocation Housing: What to Actually Ask Your Employer to Cover

Relocation packages vary enormously between employers. Here's what's worth asking for specifically, not just “is there a relocation package.”

"Does the job come with relocation help?" is too vague a question to actually plan around. Here's what's worth asking specifically once you have an offer that involves moving cities.

Temporary housing during the transition. Many relocation packages cover a set number of weeks in corporate housing or a hotel while you search for a permanent place — ask for the specific duration and whether it's flexible if your search takes longer than expected.

A lump sum vs. reimbursed expenses — ask which one, specifically. A flat relocation stipend gives you flexibility but caps what you can spend; reimbursement-based packages might cover more but require documentation and approval as you go. Neither is automatically better — it depends how predictable your actual moving costs are.

Broker or platform fees, if your target city has them. Some markets have real upfront costs beyond rent and deposit — worth asking directly whether the package covers these or just the physical move itself.

Whether the package covers a house-hunting trip before you commit. Signing a lease sight-unseen in a new city is a real risk — ask if a pre-move visit is covered, even a short one.

Get everything in writing, not just a verbal HR conversation. Relocation terms discussed informally have a way of shrinking by the time you actually need to use them — a written offer letter addendum protects you.

Once you know your actual budget and timeline, tell Nova and let it search while you handle the rest of the move.
