Stanford Off-Campus Housing: Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Where Grad Students Actually Live

Stanford's off-campus market splits sharply between undergrad-adjacent Palo Alto and the wider grad-student radius. Here's how that actually works.

Stanford's own on-campus housing covers most undergrads, which means off-campus searches near Stanford are disproportionately grad students, postdocs, and staff — a different search than a typical undergrad-heavy college town.

Palo Alto itself is the closest option and the most expensive real estate in the immediate area — walkable or a short bike ride to campus, University Ave's restaurants and shops included.

Menlo Park and East Palo Alto sit just north, generally a softer price than Palo Alto proper for a still-short commute — worth comparing directly rather than assuming "next door" means "similar price."

Mountain View and Redwood City, a bit further south and east respectively, widen the search meaningfully — both have their own Caltrain stops, which matters if you're commuting by transit rather than bike or car.

The grad-student-specific factor: many grad programs run on a schedule that doesn't map to the standard fall-semester housing rush — if that's you, see housing on a non-standard academic schedule for how the timing calculus changes.
