Westwood vs. Sawtelle vs. Palms vs. Brentwood: Which UCLA Commute Fits You?

Four neighborhoods, four different tradeoffs for getting to UCLA. What actually changes as you move further from Westwood.

Every UCLA off-campus search starts the same way: "how close do I actually need to be?" The honest answer depends on what you're optimizing for, because Westwood, Sawtelle, Palms, and Brentwood each trade walkability for something else.

Westwood is the campus's own neighborhood — walk to class, walk to Westwood Village for food, no commute at all. That convenience is priced in, and it's also the most competitive market of the four: the closest, best-value units get claimed fastest.

Sawtelle sits a short bike ride or bus hop south. It's dense with its own restaurant strip (Sawtelle Japantown), generally a bit more breathing room on price than Westwood proper, and still genuinely close.

Palms trades a longer commute — bus or a 10–15 minute drive — for more apartment inventory and, usually, more space for the money. It's less of a "college neighborhood" feel and more residential LA.

Brentwood is the furthest of the four and the most upscale; you're commuting by car or bus, but you get a quieter, more suburban stretch of West LA in exchange.

The actual decision framework: if you don't have a car and want zero commute stress, Westwood or Sawtelle. If you want more square footage per dollar and don't mind a short commute, Palms. If quiet and space matter more than proximity, Brentwood.
